Block Island Sound

Set within a verdant landscape naturally rich in coastal resources, a contemporary retreat freely interacts with its surroundings. An unparalleled view of Block Island Sound sets a backdrop for a series of uncomplicated, yet detailed outdoor spaces. The monolithic pool and spa wedge out of existing grade, avoiding interference with the adjacent coastal buffer of native grasses, trees and shrubs. Pool fencing is reimagined in the form of weathering steel angle irons that rise and fall with the natural topography of the land. Deposited thousands of years ago, glacial erratics dot the landscape, providing a place for reflection along mown meadow paths leading to a private dock. An extensive green roof blankets the architecture in salt-tolerant grasses and perennials, with second-story terraces overlooking the garden and the gentle sea beyond.
