Five Mile River

Just before the waterway empties itself into Long Island Sound, the lush bank of Five Mile River is home to an eclectic family haven. The garden is set back from the sea wall to protect it from occasional storm surges and flood waters. Set beneath the boughs of an ancient cucumber magnolia, a swimming pool and spa peek out of the bank, creating a seat wall near the water’s edge. A lighted pier gives access to a private dock which rises and falls with the tide. Turned on end and fitted with a custom burner, native granite slabs create a raised fire pit to be enjoyed year round. Double-wide chaise lounges rest beside the pool, connected to the home’s covered terrace by irregular stepping stones. A curving gravel path crosses the gated threshold between front and rear gardens. Boston ivy pours its way over the fieldstone-clad garage and onto the cobble apron below, softening the façade and finding its way through a playful window in the architecture.
